General Questions
What is FOSSnix IT?
FOSSnix IT designs and manages business infrastructure built on open-source and Linux-based platforms. Instead of relying on subscription-heavy SaaS ecosystems, we deploy systems that organizations can own and operate long-term, with predictable costs and full control over their data.
What kinds of businesses do you work with?
FOSSnix IT works best with micro-organizations that want reliable infrastructure without being locked into expensive vendor ecosystems. This approach is often a good fit for professional offices, engineering firms, creative teams, small manufacturers, and organizations with roughly 1-20 employees.
What makes FOSSnix IT different from a typical MSP?
Most MSPs build environments around large vendor ecosystems that rely on monthly licensing.
FOSSnix IT focuses on infrastructure ownership: systems built on open platforms that your organization controls, with fewer recurring software subscriptions.
Do you only support Linux systems?
No. While the infrastructure foundation is Linux-based, we support environments that include Windows, macOS, and mobile devices. The goal is to run business infrastructure on stable open platforms while still supporting the devices people use every day.
Infrastructure & Technology
What kind of software platforms do you deploy?
Typical environments include open-source platforms for collaboration, file storage, networking, monitoring, and infrastructure management. Examples may include solutions such as Nextcloud, Proxmox, WireGuard, and other open standards-based technologies.
Are open-source platforms reliable enough for business use?
Yes. Open-source software powers much of the world’s infrastructure—including cloud platforms, global networks, and enterprise systems. The reliability comes from mature software combined with proper design, deployment, and ongoing management.
Will my data be stored in the cloud?
That depends on the design of your environment. Some organizations prefer on-premises infrastructure they directly control, while others choose hybrid or hosted deployments. FOSSnix IT designs systems based on your operational needs and data ownership preferences.
Can you migrate us away from Microsoft or Google services?
Yes. Many projects involve migrating from subscription-based ecosystems to independent infrastructure. This may include replacing services such as file storage, collaboration tools, identity systems, or VPN platforms.
Can we keep some of our existing services?
Absolutely. Many environments are hybrid. We evaluate what makes sense to keep, what should be replaced, and what should be rebuilt for long-term sustainability.
Cost & Ownership
Is open-source infrastructure really cheaper?
Often, yes—especially over the long term. Many organizations pay substantial recurring subscription costs for SaaS platforms. Open infrastructure reduces licensing costs and shifts investment toward systems you actually own.
What costs should we expect?
Projects typically include three types of cost:
- Infrastructure hardware or hosting
- Deployment and configuration
- Ongoing management and support
Unlike subscription ecosystems, most costs are predictable and tied to real infrastructure rather than per-user licensing.
Do we own the systems you deploy?
Yes. Your organization owns its infrastructure and retains control of its data. Documentation is provided so the systems can be understood and maintained long-term.
What happens if we decide to leave?
Because systems are built on open platforms and documented infrastructure, your organization retains control of its environment. This avoids the “vendor lock-in” problem common with proprietary ecosystems.
Support & Operations
How do clients request support?
Clients submit support requests through the FOSSnix IT support portal. Requests are tracked through a ticketing system to ensure issues are documented and resolved efficiently.
Do you offer ongoing management?
Yes. Many organizations choose ongoing infrastructure management to keep systems secure, updated, and monitored.
What geographic areas do you serve?
FOSSnix IT primarily serves organizations in the Greater Portland metro area. This includes Portland and nearby communities throughout Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington, such as Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, Lake Oswego, Gresham, and Vancouver. Remote infrastructure management also allows us to support clients in other locations when appropriate.
How do we know if this approach is right for our organization?
Request an Infrastructure Review
We can then schedule a consultation where we will review your current environment, discuss goals and constraints, and determine whether an open infrastructure approach is a good fit.
Getting Started
What is the first step to work with FOSSnix IT?
Request an Infrastructure Review
This provides the information needed to understand your current systems and determine the right next step.
Do you work on small projects?
Yes. Engagements range from focused infrastructure improvements to full platform migrations.
Can you help design a completely new IT environment?
Yes. FOSSnix IT can design and deploy a complete business IT environment from the ground up. This includes infrastructure planning, platform selection, security design, and the deployment of core systems such as networking, identity, file services, and collaboration platforms.
